Marley Update 11/3

There are several pieces of information we would like to pass along to our supporters as we hope for a successful resolve to this matter.  As many of you know, Marley is currently confined at the county animal shelter in Bay County Florida after having a biting incident after he was sleeping and a child grabbed him.

The most recent information we are getting is that Bay County as changed their dangerous dog laws to put them in unison with that of the state.  This is important because this is something they should have been doing from the get go.  There is no excuse for the delay in properly handling this matter.  We are disgusted by the ignorance of state statutes as this creates not only a delay for the resolve, but it also is a taxpayer headache.

Finally, throughout all of the headache caused via the dangerous dog ordinance, it appears the owner will surrender the dog, and is fighting to do so.  He has even picked out his new home, it is called Alaqua Animal Refuge.  We have looked into this and do not see anything alarming or really anything to question.  It seems like a good fit for Marley given everything he has come up against, if indeed the owner doesn’t want him back.

We will continue to bring you up to date on situations as they arise.

  • i don’t understand the comment that is posted on the picture. Are you saying that the picture depicts Marley running on grass for the first time since he has been locked up?

  • Thank you for giving Marley a chance. I wish he could go back to the home he knows.
People need to stop blaming the wrong end of the leash! It’s the owner that makes a mean dog not the DAMN BREED!

  • Its been so hard and expensive for the owners …had it not been made so hard by peoples ignorance then Marley would have been home with his family . Now theres no choice but to give him up ……

  • I can highly recommened a fantastic animal rescue and worldwide shelter in Utah called “BestFriends.”I have contributed what i could afford to this humane and wonderful organization. They rescue pets from harmsway like in Lebanon.Afganistan. Haiti, etc etc whenever disaster strikes If possible the animal in question is reunited with its family or is taken to its wonderful loving and caring sancuary in Utah where it is also given whatever training it needs so it can be if possible adopted out. If not it remains free to live at the sancuary for ts life where the animal in question receives wonderful and loving care with 24/7 Vet service. They have all different kinds of animals including horses birds, dogs cats etc etc. I supported it for obvious reasons because it is a humaine thing to do..I only wish i could have given it more.

  • Marley is like a human being with sense of danger. She’s defenseless, needs tender love and care, she has common sense. But he can be a therapy dog, he can’t defend himself nor talk what she wants. She can express herself if she needs something is just wagging her tail, barks, put her paws in your lap and bite/pull your pants or skirt going towards her.

  • What has happened to Marley is very sad. I pray that he is placed in s good, clean, loving sanctuary where he can live out his years in peace. Poor baby…..

  • This case is so upsetting and so unfair. Marley should never have been labeled dangerous. The family went to extreme lengths to comply with demands that should have never been imposed upon them. Now a startling nip has started the turmoil again, which sounds like spite in ex family. I hope and pray for the best resolve for all. #SaveMarley

  • I have been watching this article, but am now confused. I read where Marley was (in his mind) protecting a child owner from a weapon assault and bit the other child, and another incident where Marley was being wrestled with by the child bit and in return ending up tearing open the child’s previous wound. I HAVE NOT heard of Marley attacking after being startled awake. What is the story?

  • MY HEART IS BROKEN IN HOW THIS CASE HAS GONE ITS A REAL SHAME. I KNOW THIS IS HARD AND ALL DOG AND HIS FAMILY. JUST HOPE MARLEY CAN LIVE AT THIS REFUGE AND BE HAPPY WILL BE GOOD. HOPE THIS MOVE CAN BE QUICK THAT POOR DOG BEING LOCKED UP IS NOT GOOD AT ALL ON A ANIMAL. PRAYERS FOR ALL TO WORK OUT. LOVE YA MARLEY !!

  • I think that’s best. since the owner obviously can’t guarantee there won’t be a next incident, as this was strike 3. I wish the family all the best, but think Marley would be well off to go to a sanctuary/animal refuge

  • Marley should be allowed to go home to his family. I can’t believe that they are surrendering him now after all that they’ve all been through.

  • Please let Marley go home to his family. He wasn’t trying to hurt anyone he was startled. If he wanted to hurt the child he would have and could have very easily. He has suffered enough. He deserves to be with his family and be loved. Bay County should have changed their laws a long time ago and none of this would have happened. Praying for Marley and his family.

  • I’m happy to hear that Marley will be placed in a sanctuary setting. It appears this is the only way for him to have a successful life.
I know this is a very hard decision for Jonathan to make, but it is the selfless one

  • OMG why cant you just give Marley back to his owners. We give children back to abusers and drug users faster than an innocent animal. CHANGE YOUR LAWS. Let Marley go home

  • LET MARLEY GO HOME. THIS IS HORRIFYING AND SUCH A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. WORRY ABOUT ALL THE CHILD AND ANIMAL ABUSERS OUT THERE.

  • I’m mystified by the “doesn’t want the dog” statement. When you have no alternative to having them kill your innocent dog, giving him up to a sanctuary hardly means you don’t “want” the dog you rescued from a war zone and then the county extermination squad.

  • Good boy! No dog should have to go through this nonsense just to have a happy home. If a dog feels it is being threatened, it will defend itself, just like a human. The only difference of course being that dogs are better equipped because of their sharp teeth. Do not let poor Marley go through more torture just because a child was very poorly looked after!

  • Beautiful, so glad for Marley, but was not at fault; too bad the people cant see that. Children must be taught to respect animals.
This poor dog came from a terrible situation and is not at fault for anything at all.

  • I’m glad to hear Marley likely won’t be put down ( I can’t use the term euthanized, as that’s wrong. That word is for sick people & animals who want/need to be put out of pain. It’s not to meant to make the killing of pets sound pretty). But I’m disturbed but your wording when you say “if indeed his owner no longer wants him” that Marley will go to a sanctuary. I’ve followed this case for a long time, & it’s clear Johnathon Jones & his family very much want Marley back, but they clearly feel they have no choice now. They said that they knew Marley would have to be “perfect” for them to be able to keep him- how tragic! This poor dog & the family were traumatized for 11 months while Marley was in solitary confinement. Then they were prevented by Bay County’s ridiculous ordinance from sending Marley to get the re-training they knew he needed. They wanted Marley to get re-training to be better able to cope & the judge’s ordinance prevented it- how incredibly stupid was that! And then a fight between exes lands Matley back in custody & on death watch. Mr Jones clearly was desperate to just save Marley’s life at that point, asking that he be allowed to go to a sanctuary rather than be killed. But he never said he didn’t want him back. He clearly did. I know you want the best for the dog, but please don’t imply that this family doesn’t want this baby back! They do. The whole corrupt situation is heart breaking enough without thinking they stopped wanting him. But they are looking out for Marley, & would rather see him live in a sanctuary than die as their pet. Thank you

  • If he was trying to defend a family member why all this fuss trying to destroy him. He is only doing his job. As for the people surrending him they are really nuts. How can you give up a dog that was protecting you? I would love to have him. Let me know how I would go about doing this. May I hear from you. Thank you.

  • Marley belongs at home not in a refuge. That is sad and cruel to take that away after the life he lived overseas in a warzone. The poor dog gets spooked, something the family should already understand, besides the fact the boy was not seriously hurt. Bring Marley back to his owner he’s been through enough.

  • Wish I could take him. Marley was given a bad deal on this whole thing. It just isn’t right. This dog needs the love and caring of a person with his interests at heart.

  • If he was trying to defend a family member why all the fuss over Marley to lock him up. He was only doing what was right. I would love to have this dog. Please let me know what I have to do to get him. you may contact me at my email address. thank you and may I hear from you?

  • It breaks my heart to know that the owner had to surrender his dog. No blames on him, it is an understandable situation since it is an expensive process, no everyone can afford. I agree that the shelter is a good alternative for this family/dog. Hope they can get a positive resolution soon.

  • All this fighting … great for changing the law for the future. Sad that the owners don’t want the dog they fought for back. at this point, perhaps the sanctuary is a good idea but still very sad.

  • The family DOES WANT HIM HOME, they are willing to have him live his life out at the sanctuary, so that he can live. Cecilia Furnish

  • Hard to believe that after all this, the owner wouldn’t want him back, unless it’s because of the neighbor’s and community. If it were me, and I could get my dog back as a choice, I would move as far away from those neighbor’s as I could. But either way, I hope that Marley can be safe and happy.

  • . I’m no dog expert but I do know this much dogs don’t don’t act afraid or Shake for no reason at all which means well this poor dog Marley was staying that year in the shelter that Animal control officer must have done some pretty abusive things to him that’s the only reason why Carly would shake and be afraid of anything or any person that alone should be proof enough but he was not well taken care of and that it’s more of a personal issue who’s right on the Bay County Animal Shelter then the actual facts of what a bullshit case this is and I agree with some of the other comments their bed on the change.org someone in that house doesn’t want there poor dog back that is evidence enough and just what happened recently shame on the owner he should have been more careful and more watchful knowing that everything that you went through in the last year to get him back and I do hope you guys are good sanctuary and I do pray that he does not get put to sleep people make me so sick sometimes I’ll take animals any day over people

  • Please don’t stop fighting for Marley. After all that he has been through in his life he needs a break. I hope his owner will not give up on him!!!

  • Has the owner thought about obedience training to see if it might help with Marley? I know Marley’s history and sometimes things like training can work. I just pray that everything works out for Marley.

  • Thank you for the updates and fighting for Marley. Marley looks very alive, happy grinning and running. I’m happy Marley’s going to get a second chance, even though he was just protecting himself. Its our responsible to watch kids around our furkids, as kids can be thoughtless.

  • Damn these stupid FL laws!! I’ve lived in the Tampa Bay are for 30 years now and I swear that the laws, or rather the government, just becomes more and more inane. Are there any emotionally intelligent people ever running for political seats?

Animals in this state suffer the most due to laws that are not totally enacted or if put through there are other mini-laws added into the bill that screw up a total intent.

I’ve rescued and been a volunteer at a shelter here. My love is for animals and always will be. Praying that the sanctuary is one that is healthy, safe and large.

  • It’s a shame people can’t be forgiving and giving second chances! This poor dog did something totally impulsive and was startled. I’m loosing faith in humans and I’ve been around a long time! Just recalling what Marley went through as a puppy is inconceivable! The law is so screwed up! This is a life! Now that the gracious owner has relinquished Marley- – I just know he’d do the same if his daughter had bitten another child, right? He doesn’t deserve her! Not one second! I will certainly hope you who are fighting for a Marley will keep a very very close eye on this sanctuary because there are way too many that aren’t reliable-again my loss of belief in humans!

  • I don’t understand why Marley’s owner would give up the animal unless a need for another dog was needed immediately. To fight for so long for something and then give up is confusing.

  • 11/3/16

    Hello,

I am very sad, that the owner has decided to surrender “Marley” to a sanctuary. I was hoping the owner , would make life style changes , that would prevent children, from interacting with “Marley”, other than the family members. I also have a dog, I must make decisions for, to keep him safe from children, as well, as
other dogs, that have the potential, to cause harm to my “lil” guy !!!! But, that’s what is necessary, when you have a
Special Needs, pooch, which “Marley” is.

I know the owner has gone through a lot, as well, as his family, so,
I wish, and hope, “Marley” will do
well, in a sanctuary. I truly hope so.

  • I am sure they want Marley back if they take him off the dangerous dog list. If not I am sure they can visit Marley if they can. But we have to think what’s best for Marley.

  • After all that this Family has gone through as well as Marley now the Family doesn’t want Him…How Sad!!!
Maybe another kind hearted Family could raise Marley? It seems so unfair that Marley has to go through this.
Isn’t there someone Out There that could Adopt Him, so, so Sad 🙁

  • I am confused! On 9/18 I read that Marley was home with his family. Next I read he is back at Animal Control and the owner wants him to go to a Sanctuary., what did I miss? Why is he not staying with his family? Why is he back with the Animal Control?

  • Marley should be back with his family. He didn’t do anything wrong. He just got scared and he was defending himself from danger…he’s the one who got attacked while resting…
What amazes me is how many parents don’t teach their children on how to approach dogs and other animals. The lack of communication, compassion and empathy towards the animals is something that parents should instill from a very young age.
Respect the animals and protect the animals.
We should be more afraid of humans than animals.
Free Marley, let him go home to his family 🙏

  • I have a theory that there are no bad dogs, just bad humans. Why was an obviously unsupervised child allowed to molest Marley while he was sleeping ….. that was a bite waiting to happen! Don’t take it out on the dog for being a dog ….. take it out on the irresponsible adult who failed Marley miserably.

  • Marley has gone through so much. He should be loved and respected. Pl find him a safe home.

  • All I have to say is that this poor dog has been through enough. He is in a war zone on the other side of the world comes home and is living in a war zone here. He needs the same support that our soldiers need. Help not kill him.

  • Sad that Marley’s human does not want to take him back, but glad that there is a refuge for him. Also good to get the law fixed! Thanks for the update.

  • I believe Marley’s case was mishandled from the beginning. This is a sad ending for his owner who did everything possible to conform to ridiculous rules put forth by Bay County Animal Control. Thankfully it appears Marley will be allowed to go to a sanctuary where he should be safe and loved. It’s great that so many people fought for Marley.

  • why did the owner turn the dog in when their kid got bit if they knew the situation? hope they never get another animal. just for future reference, you could tell the doctor another story if you were so inclined. this lie God would forgive.

  • Marley is just a dog who did his job. Let him go to the sanctuary you heartless officials. You blew this so badly-now fix it.

  • Are they putting Marley in Alaqua Animal Refuge to b adopted out? What good will that do if he feels he is protecting his new owner & bite again?

  • When did it happen that we lost the right to make the decision what when on in our own homes. I live in Troy NY. Own multiple dogs and at times they have gotten into scuffles. On one occasion they got out of hand and during my trying to break them up I was bitten in the knee pretty bad. They were my dogs so nothing was done. If they ever told me that I had to destroy my own animal, I would lose my mind. It’s becomes ridiculous when a parent cannot judge whether their children are in danger or not of the dog they have living in their home. We need the state, animal control and who else to make those decisions. I think Florida had a problem.

  • I do not reponse t this email because I am not good writing letters or making comments. There are other animal shelters that they write an answer for the person and then we send it. In the future can you do that so I can participate?
    Thank You

  • Please help Marley. He was only doing what he was taught to do…protect his owner. When the children were playing cops and robbers and the older boy had on a ski mask and a toy gun in his hand, Marley thought there was a danger to the younger boy. And it wouldn’t have been an issue if a neighbor had not called authorities. After he was allowed to come home, he was sleeping and a child startled him awake and he nipped at the child. After all he’d been through at the shelter during his long stay waiting to resolve the first issue, it’s no wonder he was so startled he nipped at the child. He could have done more damage had he chosen to do so. But now everyone is abandoning poor Marley. You are his only hope. Please don’t let him stay in the shelter and be euthanized.

  • Thank you for the update and the work you are doing to save Marley.
Too bad he can not go back home, but at least he is alive and might be happy again at the new shelter

  • I am happy that Marley will not be put down. That would have been a travesty. He is not a dangerous dog. I am saddened that the owner does not want him back as I believe Marley and the owner just need to engage in some behavioral work with a skilled trainer so there is understanding of Marley’s trigger when he feels he needs to be protective. Dogs with much more serious issues has been re-trained. It was my hope that the owner would take the time to work with Marley and also MAKE SURE he is vigilant to make sure Marley isn’t in a situation where the dog feels he needs to be protective. This dog has been through so much and now it is losing it’s pack (it’s family). But as long as this rescue is above board and will take care of Marley and has the skills necessary to work with Marley in a kind and understanding way, then I guess that is best for Marley. Perhaps Marley could be adopted out to someone skilled in behavior of a reactive dog; someone with no children.

  • Poor Marley- it appears he has become the brunt of misguided human ignorance. This dog obviously wants to protect what he sees as a precious thing to have-his owner. I can’t blame his owner for trying to save his life any way he can. If giving him a sanctuary for a home will do this then so be it. A sanctuary is better than the war zone he came from. Good luck Marley and enjoy the grass.

  • wow i can’t believe the owner wants to get rid of his dog. no loyalty what a betrayal. dogs bite when u startle them. my dog bit me in the face when i was 6 for getting in her face while she was sleeping. it hurt like hell but that was my fault for startling her. people are idiots.

  • This is not the way a person in these decision positions does what is right. This is simply a way of circumventing making the right position. When did these judges quit making rules from the bench affecting so many lives? Now is the time to use common sense.

This veteran’s family has given up 7 years of this animal’s life (1yr = 7 yrs for a dog), for a non-existent reason. As I understand it a nosey neighbor who happened to be present reported this to the authorities. (Can’t tell you how many times I was bitten for accidentally stepping on our dogs.)

FBI Director Comey would argue that it was not the dogs INTENT to hurt anyone and he would be right. I believe a precedent has been set that the Judge needs to use.

The Bay County court should pay for Marley to be trained by Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer. Check him out on Facebook= cesar milan .

Only a heartless person w/o ill-informed person would keep a dog rescued in Afghanistan from his rescuer who went to great lengths and expense to get him and bring him to the USA. The problem is that he is still in the streets of Afghanistan, only worse because it the USA, and his faithful Veteran friend’s hands seem to be tied by unnecessary rules.

BRING MARLEY HOME TO HIS FAMILY AND MAKE THE USA A SAFE PLACE FOR A DESERVING REFUGEE AND PUT THE FAITH AND LOVE BACK IN THE HOME AND HEARTS OF A VETERAN AND THOUSANDS OF SUPPORTERS.

  • Could it be that Marley was abused in the animal shelter where he was for a year. Very inhumane treatment may be the cause of more episodes.

  • So sorry to hear that it came to this but the alternative would have been much worse. He looks very happy where he is. I used to have a dog that was “protective” in some circumstances, but she never bit other dogs or people (but we had her from puppy age).

  • The owner is going to give him up?What’s the matter with him?How could he? I pray every night for Marley. He’s going to give up? Shame on him!

  • I am deeply concerned about Marley, and what he going through.
I know everyone has tried to help, but unfortunately it just hasn’t worked.Every single day while poor Marley is
left in a glass cage waiting it makes him very sad and confused. He doesn’t understand what he did wrong. Every time he is taken out and brought home and the city takes him back is absolutely inhumane.
When did Marley become a part of other things? Although other animals, shelter help, etc. are important, Marley is left in that chamber every single Day.
Things are being worked on,yet they never work out. Nothing is working as far as getting him to a sanctuary, It is either he can or he can’t. Again, day after day he is left.I have rescued animals for the past 25 years and I have seen this before.Marley needs to be where he is loved and happy and if possible with his rescuer Johnathon. But again, Marley sits in that glass cage.He is just left with nothing, he is probably going stir crazy.
Sometimes there are more humane things that would be better. What has been done to Marley is criminal. That whole city should be sued!
But again, there sits Marley. Please understand, I want so much for Marley to be happy and in a loving home, but he is left again and that to me is cruel.
Please don’t fire back at me with insults, I say these things because I care about Marley. It breaks my heart. But leaving him every day in that glass chamber is worse.Committing a dog or cat to life in a cage is unethical and inhumane, Marley doesn’t deserve this.

  • So sorry to hear about all the problems with Marley😢 He seems like a good boy that just had a lot if unfortunate things happen to him…I hope it all works out for ALL of you 💖
